Learn to Ski

Derek Dechert, Owner/Instructor

Derek has been waterskiing since the age of 6. During high school, Derek attended Bill Peterson's ski school in Florida and has competed in numerous tournaments. He is a certified instructor through USA WATERSKI . He is a 1992 graduate of Indiana University    Bloomington. He also holds a film production certificate from New York University.

When he is not running Indy Ski School or waterskiing, Derek is a Union stagehand. You can find him around town at local venues like the JW Marriot, Old National Center, Bankers lifeField House, the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadiun working at conferences, sporting events, and concerts as a technician.

He has been in the Entertainment business for 25 years and is a proud member of both The Director's Guild of America (DGA)  and The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). One of his claims to fame is working on the game show “Jeopardy” for 5 1/2 years and later on the NBC soap “Sunset Beach.” 

He lives in Geist with his wife Pam and his son Brodie. They attend Saint Simon the Apostle Catholic Church and enjoy the lake, people and amenities of Geist.

 

Meredith Burns is a 21-year old from Lexington, KY. She comes from a family that loves to water-ski and started her at a young age. She began water-skiing at the age of 6, and wakeboarding at the age of 9. Her concentration on the water is slalom skiing. Meredith currently attends Butler University in Indianapolis and is pursuing majors in Music and Digital Media Productions. In her free time, she enjoys playing the oboe and swimming. Her favorite place to be is at the lake and she looks forward to sharing her passion for watersports with all those at the Indy Ski School this summer.

Jason Highley,  is a 19 year old student at Indiana University. He has lived on Geist for 9 years. He graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School and is also very active in the youth group Holy Spirit at Geist. He has been racing go-karts on a national level for 10 years. He enjoys playing the piano and guitar in his free time. Jason has also competed in an amateur wakeboard league for 2 years and each year placed 1st in his class with an invitation to compete in the Regional tournament. Last year Jason placed 3rd in the Eastern Regional. He is a member of the IU Wakeboard Team as well and placed 2nd in the Collegiate Regional Tournament as the C rider for their team. He cannot wait to help you progress to the best wakeboarder that you can be.

 

Jessica Hults is a 20-year-old girl who has grown up on Geist Reservoir enjoying all types of water sports.  She has especially grown to love wakeboarding, which she started at age 12.  She was featured in the May/June 2006 Fishers/Geist Magazine for wakeboarding and has participated in many wakeboarding competitions in and around Indiana. Some of her awards include the following:  2nd Place at INT State Championships-Women’s Novice (2006), 3rd Place at USA Wakeboard Championships (2007-Dayton, Ohio), 1st Place at Hypertour (2007), State Champion for Wakeboard Women Entro for Indiana INT (2007), 1st Place at National Wakeboard League National Championship-Woman’s Novice (2007), State Champion for Wakeboard Women for Indiana INT (2008), and 1st Place at Indy Open at the Precedent: Grassroots Series-Women’s Division (August 14 &15, 2010).  This summer she plans on training for wakeboarding, so that she can be a member of the Indiana University Waterski and Wakeboard Team since she will be a freshman at IU this fall.  Jessica looks forward to sharing her passion for water sports with the students of Indy Ski School.
